The Gough Group is one of the largest employers of Heavy Automotive Engineering Apprentices in New Zealand with about 50 people enrolled in our programs at any one time. An apprenticeship with us will set you up for a successful career within our industry which is fueled by technical advances and is constantly evolving.
Our Goughs Institute of Training in-house facility gives our Apprentices invaluable knowledge, training and support and allows the opportunity to provide Apprenticeships throughout the company.
Your Apprenticeship success will offer endless opportunities for a diverse long-term career within the Gough Group. Working in Antarctica, open coal or gold mining locations, leadership or technical roles are just a few options open to you. Many of our team members began their careers as a Gough Apprentice and have enjoyed diverse careers full of highlights and achievements.
As an apprentice you will complete a 4 year apprenticeship training programme. Practical and theory skills are learnt by distance learning, on the job training, in-house product training and off-job polytechnic courses. Your practical skills are developed in our workshops and in the field where you will work alongside our qualified Heavy Diesel Technicians, Fitters and Engineers.
Upon completion of your chosen apprenticeship you will hold one of these National Certificates
- Heavy Automotive – Plant & Equipment
- Heavy Automotive – Material Handling
What we look for
Completing a 4 year apprenticeship takes discipline, dedication and hard work.
We look for personal qualities of strong mechanical aptitude, passion in everything you do, an eye for detail, enthusiasm, the ability to work well in a team and solve problems.
You will also require
- NCEA Level 2 with good results in Maths and English
- Full Class 1 driving licence by January 2020
- Successful completion of a pre-trade automotive course
- Work experience at your local branch is highly advantageous
- Computer skills

We typically recruit for Apprentices on an annual basis, advertising our opportunities in September/October for a January start the following year.
